Car Keys 03/16/2012

A Spare Key

It's always handy to have a spare set of keys. You never know when you might lose a set, or need to let a friend or family member borrow your main set. Also, what happens if you find yourself accidentally locked out? Sometimes, keeping a spare key in your office desk or locker can be the difference between a slight inconvenience or a pricey locksmith.

Technolgy is Great

We've been cutting double-sided car keys since we opened. But, in the last 15 years or so, more and more cars use "Chip Keys." These keys have little transponder chips embedded in the handle. You need to have that chip encoded properly so that the car will accept the key in the ignition. These added chips are a great extra layer of security to protect your car.

The problem is, we haven't been able to copy those types of keys. It takes a special kind of high-tech machine and some training to be able to make those types of copies. We've had to tell customers that we can't accommodate them and have sent them back to their dealerships.

Good News is Here

On Tuesday, we got our certification to start copying these ChipKeys! We have the systems to make a valid copy. Now, these keys are a bit more expensive than the older steel keys, but you'll still save a bundle compared to what you'd get at the dealer. We also now carry a wide selection of Car Alarm Remotes. We can match your current Fob to a new Fob. A spare Fob is handy for when you might need to give someone access to your car without needing to give them a key, like when you are in a group at a football game or amusement park.

Check it Out

We're pretty excited about our new 'toy'. We hope you might drop by and check it out. You can put your car key in our tester machine to see if you have a ChipKey that we can copy. Maybe you don't want a spare key, but wouldn't it be kind of fun to see if your local, neighborhood hardware store is high-tech enough to make a copy?
